A garage door that jumps off its track usually hangs crooked, jams halfway or tilts out of the opening. It is one of the most common garage door problems in Carrollton, and one of the most dangerous to fix yourself. A typical two-car door weighs well over 100 pounds, and once a roller leaves the track, that weight is no longer held where it should be.
Why garage doors come off the track
A bump from a car or mower
Backing into the door or clipping the track with a mower or bike can bend the track or push a roller out. Even a small bend creates a spot where rollers bind and jump.
Worn or broken rollers
Older steel rollers rust, flatten and lose their bearings. A worn roller can slip out of the track as the door moves, especially near the curve at the top.
A snapped cable
Lift cables raise both sides of the door evenly. If one cable breaks or slips off its drum, one side drops and the door twists out of the track. If the door hangs lower on one side, a cable is a likely cause.
Loose track brackets
Brackets that hold the track to the wall loosen over years of vibration. The track moves out of line and the rollers lose their grip.
What to do right away
- Stop using the door. Do not press the opener button again. The motor can pull the door further out of the track or bend panels.
- Unplug the opener so nobody runs it by accident.
- Keep people and pets away from the door. An off-track door can shift or fall.
- Leave the car where it is if it is inside, unless you can get it out without touching the door.
- Take a photo of both tracks and the bottom of the door. It helps the technician bring the right parts.
What not to do
- Do not try to force the door up or down by hand.
- Do not hammer the track back into place while the door is in it.
- Do not loosen or adjust springs or cables. They hold a lot of tension and can cause serious injury.
How a technician fixes it
A technician secures the door so it cannot move, then checks the tracks, rollers, cables and springs. Bent track sections are straightened or replaced, worn rollers are swapped for new ones, and the door is guided back into the track. If a cable snapped, it is replaced along with any damaged drum. The door is then balanced and tested so it runs smoothly and evenly.
Our roller and track repair service covers off-track doors, bent tracks and worn rollers. If the door hangs crooked, our cable repair service replaces snapped or slipped cables.
How to prevent it
- Have the door tuned up once a year so worn rollers are caught early
- Keep the area near the tracks clear of bikes, bins and tools
- Watch for a door that shakes, scrapes or sits lower on one side
- Tighten nothing on the springs or cables yourself, and call for a check instead
A regular tune-up is the easiest way to keep the door on track. If your garage door is off track now, call Carrollton Garage Door Repair at (770) 555-0196 and we will get it back in place safely.
